Bucs end 11-year skid against Green Knights


Beloit College defeated visiting St. Norbert, 34-31, to end an 11-year losing streak Saturday in Midwest Conference football.


Mat Kahl’s 22-yard field goal with six seconds remaining shook the monkey off the Buccaneers’ back. Beloit had not beaten St. Norbert since 1998.


The Bucs went 65 yards in seven plays 47 seconds after the Green Knights had tied the game at 31-31 on Roger Nault’s 29-yard field goal with 53 seconds remaining.


Beloit led 24-14 at the half on a 37-yard Kahl field goal with no time remaining, but touchdown passes of 14 and seven yards to Joe Green gave St. Norbert a 28-24 lead with 3:06 to play in the fourth quarter.


The Bucs bounced back with a 69-yard touchdown pass from Brian Maughn to Odin Grina to put Beloit back in the lead, 31-28 with 2:07 to play.


Edgerton High graduate Derek Carrier caught a 20-yard TD pass from Maughn to put Beloit ahead 21-7 with 12:35 to play in the second.


Maughn was 28-for-36 for 357 yards with one interception and the three TDs. Carrier and Grina each had 108 receiving yards, while Julian Ross had 102 yards on his team-leading nine catches. Terence Steward rushed for 96 yards on 15 carries.
