Owner of razed building could get chance to salvage
JANESVILLE — The city of Janesville might offer the owner of the Case building a chance recycle debris from the site of building.
The Case Feed building, 922 Rockport Road, was demolished Tuesday by the city. The owner of the building, the Madison-based North American Group of Companies, did not respond to two city-imposed deadlines to fix the building, beginning with a raze-or-repair order in October and a second deadline in June.
After the demolition, K. Andreah Briarmoon, the real estate agent involved in the building’s sale, filed an appeal of a city administrative decision.
The appeal asked that the owner be given the chance to salvage material from the site.
On Thursday, Gale Price of the city’s community development department said the city is considering sending a letter to the building’s owner offering time to remove any materials they think are reusable.
But because the city was responsible for the demolition, the owners would have to hire a contractor and sign a wavier releasing the city from liability.
Briarmoon said the bricks are worth money because they can be used for another historical renovation project.
Price said lead paint on the bricks might present a safety issue that would make them unusable.
