— Lucas Cardona scored both of Madison Memorial’s goals in a 2-0 Big Eight boys soccer victory over Janesville Craig on Thursday night.

Craig High goaltender Peter Cooney turned away 18 other Memorial shots.

The Cougars fell to 2-5 overall and 0-2 in the Big Eight, but Craig coach Charles Friedrich was happy with his team’s effort.

“We had opportunities,” he said. “We had a penalty kick at the 76-minute mark, and it hit the post and bounced out. We were really pushing them in the second half.”

Cardona scored in the 28th minute on an assist from Kenji Kunuji, then Cardona added an unassisted goal in the 63rd minute.

“They’re a good, quality team,” Friedrich added. “They’re so fast.”

Friedrich said Saul Arellano, who is coming off a suspension, will see his first game action when the Cougars travel to Middleton on Tuesday.

“We’re looking forward to him coming back. He’s a solid, solid defender,” Friedrich said.
