Brodhead’s Collins signs with UWGB
Not only did the Brodhead High School senior sign her national letter of intent to play Division I softball for UW-Green Bay, but she was caught up—like everyone else—in the buzz that circulated throughout the school.
Collins signed for her scholarship at 9 a.m. Classmate J.J. Panoske signed a Division I scholarship at 9:30 to play basketball for UW-Milwaukee, and the Brodhead/Juda football team will play for the WIAA Division 4 state title Thursday night at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison.
Life as a student at Brodhead High is pretty good these days.
“It’s very enjoyable right now,” Collins said of the high school experience. “We’re such a close-knit school anyway, that with everything going on, it’s a fun time.”
Collins was sold on the Phoenix program since her sophomore year. She her school’s season record-holder in batting average (.538) and runs scored (32) and a three-time All-Rock Valley South first-team selection.
Although Collins catches for the Cardinals, she is expected to make the switch to the outfield at UW-Green Bay. She played outfield for the Badger Blitz, a traveling team that also featured 2009 Janesville Craig High graduate and current UW-Green Bay player Gabrielle Cassady.
“I’ve played on the same team with Gabrielle since I was about 10 years old,” Collins said. “Even though we both caught in high school, Gabrielle played first base for the Blitz, and I was in the outfield. It was a lot of fun, and with her already going there, it made my decision a little easier.
“But I liked Green Bay all along. Everything just fit into place for me there. They have a great physical therapy program, and that’s what I want to get into.”
