Delavan-Darien teachers log extra hours to help food pantries

— The teachers of the Delavan-Darien School District donated 1,465 food items to the Delavan and Darien food pantries in honor of American Education Week.

According to the Delavan-Darien School District blog, teachers In October logged the number of extra hours that they put in for one week above and beyond their contracted work day. Each donated food item represents one extra hour of time put into the classrooms and schools.

American Education week is Nov. 14-20, 2010. The week’s theme this is year is Great Public Schools: A Basic Right and Our Responsibility.

The week, sponsored by the National Education Association, spotlights the importance of providing every child in America with a quality public education from kindergarten through college, and the need for everyone to do his or her part in making public schools great.

The theme reflects the Association’s calling upon America to provide students with quality public schools so that they can grow, prosper, and achieve in the 21st century.
