DELAVAN — Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy will take the stage at Delavan-Darien High School May 21-23, as the DDHS Drama Department presents the musical “Little Women.”
Fourteen DDHS students make up the cast of the musical, which is based on the popular novel of the same name by Louisa May Alcott.
“Everybody knows this story,” said Director Janet Palmer, a music teacher in the Delavan-Darien School District. “It’s based on the novel printed in the mid-1800s that probably half of us had to read for high school English. It’s a classic story, with classic characters, that should be familiar since so many have read the book.”
The classic novel was adopted for the stage by composer Jason Howland, scriptwriter Allen Knee and lyricist Mindi Dickstein.
Palmer and the DDHS performers chose the musical because of the strong vocal skills of some of the senior girls on the cast.
Seniors Carolyn Christianson and Josie Palmer have been in just about every stage performance possible in their high school careers, and Jordan Boardman played the coleading role of Audrey in the school’s rendition of “Little Shop of Horrors” two years ago, director Palmer said.
Christianson, Boardman and Josie Palmer star as Meg March, Beth March and Jo March, respectively, three of the four sisters featured in the musical. The fourth sister is played by freshman Toni Seitz.
“For our short show, we always have the upper-class in mind,” Janet Palmer said. “Last year, we did “Odd Couple” because we had several very strong, comedic boys. This year, we have a group of amazingly strong vocal senior girls. That’s why we ended up with this musical for what has traditionally been our season-ending play.”
Show times are at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, May 21-22. A matinee performance starts at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 23.
Tickets are available at the door an hour before the performance times — $5 for adults or $3 for students and senior citizens.
All performances will be in the Delavan-Darien High School Auditorium, 150 Cummings St., Delavan.
