Fire smolders through a field in Sharon Township from what began as a controlled burn. Terry Mayer/staff

SHARON TOWNSHIP -- Gusty winds turned a controlled burn into a runaway brush fire Tuesday in Sharon Township.

The Sharon Fire Department was dispatched about 2:30 p.m. to a field near the intersection of Wisconsin Highway 67 and Chilson road, just south of the Big Foot Airport.

The fire was being used to clear away dried brush on a two-acre field when it spread to nearby corn stalks, according to dispatchers.

Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control.
