Monroe gets closer to state

It will Monroe against Union Grove at Janesville Craig High at 1 p.m. Saturday to see who gets a spot in the WIAA girls basketball state tournament.

The Cheesemakers (24-1) earned their spot in the sectional final with a 54-42 victory over Richland Center in a sectional semifinal at Waunakee on Thursday night.

Senior guard Gwen Sutter led Monroe with 14 points. The Cheesemakers used a 17-8 second quarter to take a 26-17 halftime lead, then made 11 of 14 free-throw attempts in the final 3½ minutes to stay ahead of the Hornets (22-3).

Monroe made 22 of 29 free throws in the game.

-- Union Grove 56, Columbus 42—Union Grove used a 33-16 advantage in the middle two quarters to down Columbus in a sectional semifinal game at Kettle Moraine on Thursday night.

Alyssa Thomas scored 15 points, Haly fink added 14, and Megan Lee added 12 for the winners, who play Monroe at Janesville Craig High in the sectional final Saturday.

The Broncos take a 23-2 record into the game.

Columbus, which finished 22-3, was led by Megan Crombie’s 13 points, while Heidi Paul added 12.
