— Investigators from the Walworth County Sheriff's Office have been asked to review village of Caledonia payments to a police officer’s family for squad car work. Tax experts have said such an arrangement appears like tax fraud.

The village board Tuesday voted unanimously to ask the Walworth County Sheriff's Office to do the review to avoid any possible conflict of interest.

The investigation centers on the village's payment in 2009 to Police Officer Curtis Schollmeier’s family and, apparently, his friends, for squad car work. The work totaled $4,900, according to a story in the Racine Journal Times.

But the payments were no more than $600 each, avoiding the issuance of tax form 1099 that employers are required to file for a private contractor.

When previously asked about it, Caledonia Police Chief Jeffrey Meier accepted responsibility for the financial arrangement with the officer, though he said Schollmeier was obligated to report the payments on his tax return.

The board plans to meet after the investigation to review the findings. The Police and Fire Commission has the ultimate authority for any disciplinary action.
