WHITEWATER Two summer camps at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater hope to make technology interesting and fun for middle- and high-school girls.
CyberGirlz, a weeklong day camp for middle school girls, and CyberHigh, a new, two-day, overnight camp for high school girls, are designed to spark an interest in technology and perhaps inspire a career choice in information technology.
Campers attending CyberGirlz learn about digital photography, photo editing, digital scrapbooking, Web design and GPS. They will also learn about career opportunities. The camp, which is free, runs from 8 a.m. to noon Monday, July 26, through Friday, July 30. Girls will have access to the latest technology in UW-Whitewater's new Timothy J. Hyland Hall.
New this year, CyberHigh campers will build technology skills and investigate how technology can be used to solve real-world problems. The two-day camp runs from 8 a.m. Thursday, July 22, to 3 p.m. Friday, July 23. Girls will spend Thursday night in a UW-Whitewater residence hall.
"Campers will get to socialize with other girls from around the region who share similar interests," John Chenoweth said. Chenoweth is an associate professor and department chair of information technology and business education at UW-Whitewater. "For both camps, girls are mentored by current UW-Whitewater female students who are also interested in technology."
Nearly 50 girls entering sixth, seventh and eighth grades attended last summer's CyberGirlz camp, and Chenoweth expects interest to be high again this year. Girls are encouraged to register early online at: http://www.uww.edu/techcamps/.
