WIAA basketball preview: Delavan-Darien boys vs. Edgewood tonight

Delavan-Darien vs. Edgewood

Time:7 p.m. Friday.

Site: Sun Prairie High School.

Season records: Delavan-Darien, 15-9 overall, 9-5 in Southern Lakes. Madison Edgewood, 15-9 overall, 9-3 in Badger South.

Tournament status: This is a WIAA Division 2 sectional semifinal game. The winner plays Sauk Prairie (19-6) or Mount Horeb (14-11) at 7 p.m. Saturday at Waunakee for the sectional title and a berth in next week’s state tournament. Edgewood, a WIAA member since 2000, won the Division 2 state championship in 2002. Delavan, which joined Darien as a consolidated school in 1957, has not been to state since 1940. Delavan-Darien defeated Edgewood, 40-35, in a Division 2 sectional semifinal game at Janesville Craig in 2001. The Comets then lost the title game to Adams-Friendship, 55-38, at UW-Whitewater.

Free throws:Delavan-Darien has won 11 of its last 14 games. In matchups with common opponents, the Comets lost to Milton, 51-45; lost to Elkhorn, 53-43, and defeated the Elks, 71-47. Edgewood swept Milton, 65-62 in double overtime and 52-44, and lost 50-35 to Elkhorn.
