ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — An Iditarod spokesman says rookie musher Pat Moon of Chicago was injured when he crashed his sled into a tree Tuesday while competing in the 1,100-mile Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.

Iditarod spokesman Chas St. George says Belgian musher Sam Deltour found Moon unconscious on the trail, attended to him and then checked on the 33-year-old man's team.

Deltour says Moon soon reqained consciousness.

St. George says Moon was flown to Providence Hospital in Anchorage, where he received a checkup.

The spokesman says Moon's 15 dogs were not hurt but he has scratched from the race.

Satellite positioning shows Yukon Quest winner Hans Gatt of Whitehorse leading the race early Wednesday, nearing the checkpoint at Ophir, 322 miles into the race.

More than a dozen other mushers are at the Takotna checkpoint, including four-time winner Jeff King of Kenali Park and Canadian Sebastian Schnuelle.

Five of the 71 teams that left Willow on Sunday scratched Tuesday.

This is indeed a tough competition that will measure the ability of the dogs in the race.Of course the money is at stake in this game. The dogs should be trained so as to know who among them will be announce as the winner. The Iditarod 2010 is now underway, which is huge news if you live in Alaska. Well, really it should be big news everywhere because it makes a marathon look like child's play. The Iditarod is almost 1200 miles long, and usually takes more than a week to complete – granted, it is a dog sled race which greatly annoys PETA, but then again, what doesn't? (People getting eaten by animals doesn't, which is completely hypocritical – people caring more about people than animals is an evolutionary imperative, which is part of nature.) The race takes WAY more than payday loans can cover to participate in, as costs of participation run over $40,000 very easily.
