Lake Geneva Badger's Preston Dailey gets a hand on Sharod Stone's shot in the third quarter at Beloit Memorial high School. Beloit Memorial knocked off Badger with a 73-66 victory.

Sharod Stone was in the hospital last week.

On Saturday, the 5-foot-10 senior guard provided the right medicine for Beloit Memorial High School’s boys basketball team.

Stone scored 18 points in three quarters of play to lift the Purple Knights to a 73-66 victory over visiting Lake Geneva Badger in a WIAA Division 1 regional final at Barkin Arena.

The Purple Knights (16-7) will host Kenosha Bradford (16-8) in a sectional semifinal at 6 p.m. Friday. at Barkin Arena.

Junior guard Leketrious Broomfield led Beloit against Badger (7-17) with 21 points, but it was Stone who gave his team the inspirational spark. Stone has been sick for two weeks and was hospitalized what for initially was thought to be mononucleosis. That was ruled out, but the unknown infection affected the senior, and it was thought he would not be available on Saturday.

He was inserted into the game in the second quarter, and he responded with his 18 points, including three three-pointers.

That helped Beloit hold off Badger, which had advanced to the regional final by beating Janesville Parker on Tuesday night.

The Badgers never lead after falling behind 9-0, but they cut the Purple Knights’ lead to 68-65. Missed free throws hurt Badgers’ comeback attempt, and Beloit’s 6-4 senior, Robert Douglas, put the capping touch on the win with a thunderous dunk off a steal in the final seconds.

Justin Bowers, a 5-10 senior guard, powered Badger with 27 points. Preston Dailey added 20 points for Badger.
