Goose problem not on Delavan Town Board agenda

DELAVAN TOWNSHIP None of the members of the Delavan Town Board on Monday jumped to put the town’s goose problem on an agenda.
But the board had one more chance to hear people speak against the unpopular option of killing the geese that live near Delavan Lake. Opponents of the plan have a week to convince board members to change their minds.
“The information you had at the time of the vote was not complete,” Lakeland Animal Shelter Director Kristin Perry said.
Perry and others said they understand the board’s dilemma and encouraged board members to take more time to learn about options to control geese other than killing the birds.
The board in April voted to hire the USDA Wildlife Service to capture and kill geese near Delavan Lake. Since then volunteers have said they will clean goose waste near the lake if the town reverses its decision.
The board’s next regular meeting is Tuesday, June 15. Between now and then, if at least two board members ask to have the topic put on that night’s agenda, the board could talk about or even reverse goose capture plans.
Otherwise, the wildlife service will go ahead with the plan to reduce goose numbers later this month or in July.
Wildlife service workers would herd geese into cages and take them to poultry-processing plants. Adult geese would be processed into meat for food pantries. Juvenile geese would be processed for use at animal shelters and sanctuaries.
The town budgeted $4,000 from the Delavan Lake Sanitary District for the service.
In 2009, the wildlife service captured geese in 30 Wisconsin communities, spokesman Chip Lovell said. The round-ups happen in the summer when most of the geese have molted and can’t fly, he said.
He would not immediately say where in 2009 the USDA performed the service.
The Gazette has requested the information through the Wisconsin Open Records Law.
Lovell said the wildlife service only captures geese if a business or municipality has exhausted all other methods of deterring geese. The town has held special goose hunts, oiled eggs and gotten permits to destroy nests, officials have said.
Wildlife service workers will not enter private property if property owners ask them not to.
Property owners who do—or do not—want geese captured on their property along the Delavan Lake shoreline should call the Delavan Town Hall at (262) 728-3471.

PanamaRed: I believe the Town parks crew has gotten Federal permits to oil the eggs in the nests (which smothers the unborn embryo), gotten permits to shake the eggs (which purées the unborn embryo), and gotten permission to repeatedly destroy the nests prior to egg laying.
None of which have proved effective at control of the population.

Thank’s SpayandNeuter, it’s good to know there are others who believe the Town Board’s decision was poorly thought out.

That goose liver pate must have gone to your head, theshield. It would be considered hypocrisy if you support the death penalty but condemn abortion if, that is, you believe no individual (acting alone or part of a group (jury)) has the authority to end the life of another human being but I'm not about to get into a discussion on semantics with you.
It is ridiculous for crafty to compare the life and death of a goose to a human being so to bring abortion in to this argument is senseless. It’s like asking crafty if he would kill his children if they pooped on the park grass instead of the restroom. (Just to be on the safe side, NO crafty, that is not ok). I was a Delavan Township resident for much of my life but don’t recall what other methods were “explored and used through the years”. Perhaps you could list a few of them theshield.

SpayandNeuter: Really? Offensive and irrelevent?!?!? Are u insane? No, the simple fact is when you and PanamaRed don't answer the question posed makes me believe that you condemn the killing of geese but condone abortion. That's what is HYPOCRITICAL. Other methods have been explored and used through the years. You're obviously not a Delavan Township resident and don't know the extent of the issue at hand and the history of the problem. I love it when uninformed people that aren't affected by an issue weigh in on things they know nothing about. Give me a break. Go back to wahtever community you live in and complain about stupid things there. Don't do it here. I'm hungry for some baby goose liver pate'. mmmmmmmmm

This is just sad. PanamaRed you have made some excellent, well thought out points. While others choose to confirm what people already think is that they are a bunch of gun toting rednecks. See we can call names too. The quote, "I am a man and the one with the gun and ammo" are you serious Eman. You seriously said that and when you read it back you aren't totally and utterly embarrassed at yourself. Why is everything have to be such a power struggle? No one denies that the geese are a problem, however, there are more humane means in controlling their population that do not involve rounding them up when they are defenseless and can't fly away. That is truly cowardly. They don't even stand a chance. And why because people care about God's creatures they are called tree huggers?? You really think God put animals on this planet so you could blast them away? Or do you justify that to make you feel like a better Christian. So hypocrital. And the fetus remark? That was just offensive and irrelevant. You people need to get some new arguments.

You are missing the point crafty. I am not opposed to the killing of birds for game, providing those that hunt eat what they kill. Even though the dead birds will be donated to a food pantry, that does not justify killing the birds simply because they have become a nuisance. Killing the birds will not solve the problem. More will come to take their place. If killing the geese does not solve the problem, then what is the point?

I think you have it a little backwards Eman. Real men (and women) understand natures vital role in our world. Without nature we could not live. Trees supply our oxygen, we supply their carbon dioxide. Thats one tiny snippet of natures cycle. Everything God put on this planet serves a purpose. If you actually understood the verse where God gives man dominion over the birds of the air, you might realize he is putting the earths care (and everthing on it) in our hands. The God I serve expects to me to care for his creations, not willfully destroy them simply because they poop on my lawn. For you to twist the Word of God to justify killing the geese is blasphemy. The ONLY reason you say "these birds need to die" is because they are an inconvenience. God gave us dominion over the earth to protect it, not destroy it. Instead of wasting your time worrying about what the geese are doing, your time would be better spent studying the Bible for the true meaning of Gods Word, not the one you twist to fit your agenda.

"You really drive those of us with brains to have very poor aim when you stand opposed and defend these dirty birds."
OOOOh Eman is that some sort of veiled threat? Sounds like you have some anger issues or your manhood is in question. The last thing you need to have is a gun and ammo within your reach. So geese are dirty birds. Why? Because they don't clean up their fecal matter? My school had a playground, gym and science class. Thats where we learned things about nature; things you obviously don't know. Oh but wait, you're the one with brains because these dirty, dirty birds are spoiling your beach and you want them all dead. "They need to fear man and they need to die if they don’t." My, my, Eman you really are one tough dude. Watch out little birdies, here comes Eman with his big gun. Unfortunately its because of selfish individuals like you that we need organizations to protect our wildlife and environment. I'll gladly suck face with a tree. In fact I'll plant one tomorrow just for you.

“...it's ridiculous how u tree huggers want to save every damn thing on the planet.”
What's ridiculous, theshield, is why individuals like you believe that simply because you walk upright you actually have the capacity to think logically. Man’s attempt to dominate nature always results in disaster. Instead, we need to understand how to coexist with nature. We allow the overdevelopment of our watershed areas which results in flooding, polluted water and geese pooping on your lawn. You justify killing a bird simply because its natural activities are an inconvenience (you poor thing!). Perhaps you’re not aware of this fact theshield, but waterfowl, like geese, need space in and around watersheds to feed and procreate to ensure their survival. You, on the other hand don’t. WHY NOT try to save every damn thing on the planet! Weren’t they put here for a reason other than to kill them simply because they poop on the grass? If those people living on the lake don’t want “nature” to spoil their property they should put up a roof and walls to keep all the nasty creatures out. Killing birds because they poop on your lawn is senseless.

Gosh hodgee53115, I guess that's what happens when all the wetlands are drained and houses crowd every little puddle of water left in the county. Where do you think the geese are supposed to go? We remove every bit of their habitat then whine when they try to reclaim their territory. Mans futile attempt at forcing wildlife to conform to specific areas we have specially set aside for them continues. When all else fails, just kill them.
