Badger golfers earn trip to state

ELKHORN -- Brendan Gruenwald-Schmitz led the Badger High School golf team to a birth in the WIAA state tournament with a second-place 74 Wednesday at Evergreen Golf Club in Elkhorn.

The Badgers won the Division 1 sectional with a combined score of 312. The Sun Prairie Team was second at 320.

Elkhorn's Drew Liner shot at 77 to earn an individual trip to state.

Badger's Alex Gaugert struggled early with a double-bogey 6 on the first hole but came back to finish with a 77. Chad Henry, 79; Tyler Cuculi, 82 and Ryan Garske, 84 round out the Badger team.

The WIAA state golf tournament is June 7-8 at University Ridge Golf Course in Madison.
