The buzzer-beater came early, but certainly at a critical time for Madison Memorial High School’s boys basketball team.

Vander Blue canned a three-pointer as time expired in the third quarter Thursday night, igniting the visiting Spartans’ surge to a 56-49 victory over Madison East in the Big Eight championship showdown.

The win lifted sixth-ranked Memorial (18-4, 15-3) into a tie with third-rated East (19-3, 15-3) for the championship, giving the Spartans their seventh straight Big Eight title.

Blue’s buzzer-beater sent Memorial into the fourth quarter with 39-35 lead. The Spartans then scored the first four points of the final period for a 45-37 advantage, which East could never overcome.

Marquis Mason, East’s 6-4 senior standout, scored 10 of his 15 points in a 13-5 third quarter that brought the Purgolders back from a 15-6 deficit.

Blue finished with 21 points, and teammate Tre Creamer had 19.

Nimrod Hilliard, the hero in East’s 57-54 overtime victory over Memorial in January, was limited to 12 points.

East and Memorial, No. 1 and 2 seeds in WIAA tournament play that begins next week, could meet again the final of the Middleton Sectional on March 13. Memorial is the defending WIAA Division 1 state champion.
