Emergency workers attempt to free a passenger from a vehicle involved in a crash with a semi this morning near Darien. Terry Mayer/staff.

DARIEN -- Rescue workers used the Jaws of Life to remove one of two people in a car involved in a crash with a semi Tuesday morning in Darien.

The two Sharon residents were taken to Mercy Hospital in Janesville with non-life threatening injuries after their sedan was struck, according to the sheriff's office.

Authorities said Melissa M. Ketterhagen, 34, of Sharon failed to yield at a stop sign off Highway 43 to a semi-truck traveling on Highway 14. The semi, which had the right of way, struck the 1998 Oldsmobile Achieva.

The truck's sole occupant was driver Quinn G. Gieseke, 27, of Marengo, Ill. He was not injured, authorities reported.

Melissa is my step daughter, She is doing very well, and may be returning home today. Her injuries were serious, but we are so grateful she will recover!! It was a close call, but God is great!! Our prayers are answered!! Thank you to the many people who have been praying for her recovery.
