Local coalition pushes for freeway expansion

BELOIT As traffic counts on Interstate 39/90 continue to increase, a local coalition is pressing state officials to make lane expansion a priority among major highway projects.
“It’s about moving the project forward,” said Dan Cunningham, vice president of government relations for Forward Janesville, southcentral Wisconsin’s largest business group. “It’s all about raising awareness ... and letting our lawmakers know that there’s a lot of juice behind this, a lot of interest.”
The project was tentatively slated to begin in 2014, but will not move up on the state’s priority list until the Transportation Projects Commission takes action. State Department of Transportation daily traffic counts along the Stateline-to-Madison stretch in 2002 ranged from a high of 59,800 cars to a low of 43,400. DOT officials project the daily average will be nearly 80,000 vehicles by 2030.
Local officials expect that interstate expansion will fuel economic growth, while making the crowded freeway safer.
