— The driver of a school bus that slid into a ditch Thursday has been cited for inattentive driving, according to the Rock County Sheriff's Office.

Five students suffered minor injuries when the Clinton school bus driven by Harlan W. Biesma, 70, slid into a ditch during its morning route. Nineteen children and the driver were on the bus as it headed south on South Larson Road between County P and County W.

Biesma told deputies he was driving about 45 mph when he hit a patch of ice and lost control of the bus. The road was free of snow and ice, the sheriff's office said.

Biesma later denied being distracted, telling investigators the only reason he would have looked away from the road while driving would have been to check his mirrors.

Deputies cited Biesma for inattentive driving after reviewing evidence at the scene and looking at bus surveillance video, which showed Biesma "was looking away from the road just before the crash occurred," according to sheriff's reports.
