Log Cabin programs provide insights into rural life

— The Walworth County Home and Community Education will hold daily demonstrations in the Log Cabin at the fairgrounds, Sept. 1-6. Hours are noon to 6 p.m. Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday through Sunday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday.

HCE's will hold a quilt raffle to support their programs. Tickets will be available for a queen-size quilt using the "Wisconsin Star" pattern as first prize. Second prize is $200; third prize is $100.

Daily demonstrations in the Log Cabin will be done by skilled artisans in a wide variety of arts and crafts.

Wednesday: Peg Reedy, Ag/Agbusiness Educator with the UW-Extension, will discuss the barn quilts that are being showcased on Walworth County farm buildings. Pick up a map of the barn-quilt locations and find out how you can support the project. For more information, call (262) 741-4961.

Thursday: Doug Amon will talk about his Stop and Smell the Roses project. In 2005, he sold his milk-hauling business, and started a rose garden. Today he has 375 rose bushes in bloom from June until frost. Amon's barn features a barn-quilt design called "Rose Path."_Pick up a calendar or hat during your visit.

Friday: Lynn Abbott and Diane Abbott of Honey Bee Gourds, are folk-art lovers, who create art out of gourds. The Abbotts produce art that is functional and useful, uncovering the uniqueness of each gourd. Pieces will be available for purchase.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., HCE again will be offering a free Child Identification Kit. The Walworth County crime prevention officer will do fingerprinting and picture IDs at the Log Cabin.

Saturday: Marion Blakley, will demonstrate the folk art of Scherenschnitte, German paper-cutting, using paper, scissors and craft knives to create decorative pictures, cards, ornaments or scrapbook accents. Kits will be available for purchase.

Sunday: Sharon Lauderdale, of Saw Dust and Stitches of Elkhorn, will showcase the new Christmas and fall fabrics. Stop in and see some of the new notions and fabrics, and get started on your own projects.

Monday: Walworth County HCE Sewing Day will showcase members working on their "Stitches of Love" projects which includes quilts for the military, turbans for chemo patients, and book bags for the Wisconsin Bookworms project.
