— Distance runner Dominick Meyer of Beloit runs every day, sometimes as much as 18 to 20 miles. He’s hoping that training pays off Oct. 10 when he competes in the Chicago Marathon.

Meyer was a two-time cross-country All-American at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and 2004 athlete of the year at Beloit Memorial High School. But this will be his first marathon.

“It’s flat,” Meyer said when asked why he picked Chicago for his first marathon. “And except for last year, it’s usually a cooler marathon. However, last year, it was unseasonably hot and they had to cancel the race.”

Meyer’s career as a competitive runner began when he went out for track in seventh-grade. He fell in love with distance running as a member of the high school team at Beloit Memorial.

“Once I got on the track with the cross-country team … it really turned into something big for me,” he said. “There’s lots of team aspects to cross country and track that get overlooked.”

Meyer said his training regimen is tougher now without teammates.

“I’ve always been a team guy, and this running alone stuff is starting to get to me,” he conceded. “I listen to books on tape to try to combat that, but it’s not quite the same.”
