Bicycle trail to link Janesville and Watertown

JANESVILLE Construction is under way on a new section of bike trail on the northeast side of the city that eventually will connect Janesville to other communities.
Some $350,000 in federal stimulus money is being used to build the Rotamer Connector, which will add 1.8 miles of paved bicycle/pedestrian trail starting at the intersection of Wright Road and U.S. Highway 14.
The 10-foot-wide trail will connect to a pedestrian bridge crossing at Wisconsin Highway 26. That project, planned for 2012, will link Janesville and Watertown.
Terry Nolan, the city’s Metropolitan Planning Organization coordinator, said it is part of a long-term state plan to link Wisconsin communities with something other than roads and highways.
Plans also call for extending the trail south to Beloit, but Nolan said there is no timetable.
“We really see a tourism benefit to having a trail that goes from Janesville up to Fort Atkinson,” she said. “Bicycling is a growing recreational activity and we see a benefit of having all of our cities connect.”
