Keiya Square is taking his coaching talents to Wilmot High School.
The Delavan-Darien girls basketball coach, who led the Comets to Southern Lakes Conference titles in 2007 and 2008, has accepted the same position at Wilmot.
Square resigned from Delavan-Darien as girls basketball coach last Thursday after previously resigning as head track and field coach, and as an assistant football coach.
“It was pretty hard to say no to Wilmot,” Square said. “They’ve got great facilities, a great staff, and I’m really looking forward to the opportunity.
“I spent nine rewarding years at Delavan-Darien, but it was time to go in a different direction.”
Square, a Delavan-Darien graduate, compiled a 71-22 record in four years as the school’s girls basketball coach. Along with their conference titles under Square, the Comets advanced to sectional play twice.
A physical education and health teacher, Square thought he would land a teaching position in the Delavan-Darien district for the upcoming year.
When that fell through, Square jumped at the Wilmot opening.
“I think Wilmot is a sleeping giant,” Square said of the girls basketball program. “Plus, it sounds like even though a full-time teaching position wasn’t available there, I will be able to substitute at some level every day. I never even had that opportunity in Delavan the nine years I was there.
“I feel bad about the way it ended at Delavan because I thought I was more than qualified for the teaching position at the middle school. But things happen for a reason, and I can’t wait to get started at Wilmot.”
