PECATONICA, Ill. — They’ve undergone a few changes as usual, but organizers and participants in the Winnebago County Fair appreciate what their event represents every year.

And that’s because they offer a small, rural, hometown atmosphere that many fairs have long forgotten.

Korey Statton of Clinton and Warren Mathieu of Rockton have been involved in the fair for years and know a good thing when they see it.

“I used to show my goats at all of the county fairs around here — Boone, Walworth, Sandwich, Rock,” said Statton, 21. “My aunt and uncle live in Shirland and they said, ‘Why don’t you come and show down here?’ And that’s what started me going to Pecatonica.

“But what I like about it is that it’s nice, quiet and small — kind of like the county fairs from years and years ago.”

The fair starts Tuesday and runs through Aug. 22. Among the highlights are a larger carnival, antique tractor display and parade, tractor pulls, demolition derby, motocross, a fashion revue, fur and feather sale and musical entertainment.
