— A referendum to spend tax incremental finance money on three projects along the Fontana lakefront has been delayed, Village Administrator Kelly Hayden said Wednesday.

The referendum was scheduled to be on the ballot June 15, but Fontana Residents for Open Government earlier this month decided to abide by a written agreement it has with the village that dictates when referendums may be on the ballot.

“We weren’t trying to cause any hassle,” he said. “We were trying to be cooperative (by agreeing to have it in June.) But we thought we better be careful and go by what the agreement says.”

The agreement says referendums must be on the ballot in conjunction with regular elections in February, April, September and November.

The referendum seeks approval to spend $2.8 million on three projects: the proposed lakefront activity center, the reconfiguration of the lakefront parking lot and the reconstruction of Lake Street.

The Fontana Village Board likely will discuss a new date for the referendum at its meeting Monday, May 3, Hayden said.
