— Janesville Craig’s boys and girls track and field team had mixed results in Tuesday’s Big Eight Conference dual meet against Verona.

The Cougar girls won by a score of 78-59, but the boys came up short against the Wildcats, 86-55.

Ally Wirkus won two individual events and anchored the winning 400 relay team to lead the Craig girls.

“We’ve never beaten Verona, so this was a big win for us,” Craig girls coach Mark Marsden said. “With the depth we have, and getting back some of our best runners back from the show choir trip last week, really made the difference tonight.

“We swept all relays, and had some real good times overall.”

Mia Metcalf won the 200 for Craig and also was on the winning 800 relay team.

Cy Badertscher won two events for the Cougar boys. He set a personal best distance by winning the long jump (21-2) and also won the triple jump.

“Verona’s got a great team, and we’re still pretty young,” Craig High boys coach Jeff Deininger said. “I’m happy with the way we performed tonight.

“Cy had a great meet for us, and Tommy (Meister) was his usual strong self.”

Both Craig teams will compete in the Watertown Invitational on Friday night.
