Former Warhawk hopes to continue her hoops career in Europe

ATLANTA — It’s not unusual to find Tiffany Morton on a court somewhere playing basketball, but the former Beloit Memorial and University of Wisconsin-Whitewater basketball standout had hoped to be scoring points as a professional this year in Spain. Instead she’s playing in a Thursday and Sunday league in Atlanta and working out twice a week at open-gym sessions.
“I’ve met so many girls that have played internationally and some girls that have played Division I, and just started playing in leagues down here,” Morton said. “I’m actually trying to stay in shape to be able to play basketball.”
Morton, 23, signed a contract earlier this year with the Mataros, a professional team in Barcelona, Spain, to replace their injured post player for the final 2 1/2 months of the season. Morton’s visa, however, was not completed in time to meet the Euro basketball league’s deadline.
“I’m not ready to hang it up yet,” Morton said. “My background has given me enough to go off of as far as continuing to play overseas.”
Named female athlete of the year in 2004 as an all-conference basketball and volleyball player at Beloit Memorial High School, Morton hoped to make her mark as a Division I basketball player at Alabama A&M-Huntsville. But after a season of no playing time at A&M and limited playing time the following year at Division I University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Morton packed her bags again and took her three years of eligibility to Division III UW-Whitewater.
The two-time All-American capped off her career a year ago for the Warhawks third in career scoring with 1,215 points, fourth in rebounding (740) and sixth in blocked shots (98).
