— A Beloit man injured in a Sunday night crash that closed Interstate 90/39 remained in fair condition Monday night at a Rockford, Ill., hospital.

Aaron Brookens, 19, was flown to Rockford Memorial Hospital after the pickup truck he was driving south at about 8:30 p.m. Sunday collided with the rear of a slowing semitrailer truck driven by Duane Kovalaske, 50, of Randolph, said Sgt. John Wolfe of the State Patrol.

The crash closed the southbound lanes for more than three hours. The northbound lanes were closed for a short time to accommodate the helicopter, Wolfe said.

Wolfe said its not clear why Brookens didnt stop before colliding with the truck in front of him.

We dont really know if he was distracted or he just misjudged, Wolfe said.

Wolfe called the accident scene a pretty gruesome sight. You could hardly recognize the pickup truck.

Beloit firefighters extricated Brookens from the pickup, Wolfe said.

A reconstruction expert was brought in because of the severity of the accident. The reconstruction and the extent of the scattered debris delayed the reopening the highway, Wolfe said.
