BELOIT — Patrons of the church and restaurant where Joe Bradley holds down two jobs likely would be surprised to learn that the humble man who stands just 4-feet, 11-inches tall is a weightlifting legend.
“There was little doubt in the minds of most powerlifting experts that Bradley was on the verge of becoming the greatest powerlifter of all time,” said renowned sports psychologist Judson Biasiotto in an article published in the July 2009 edition of Powerlifting USA magazine.
Bradley’s exploits were stunning.
In April 1978, he set a world powerlifting record by bench pressing 308 pounds. He weighed only 123 pounds.
Nicknamed “Mighty” Joe, the Beloit native went on to become the first man in the world to bench press three times his own body weight. Weighing just 130 pounds in 1982, he bench pressed 402 pounds in Santa Monica, Calif.
