Opinion: We have seen the enemy, and it is ... Fox?

From the Oct. 25, 2009 CSI Walworth County Sunday "The Way we see it" column:

The odd and unseemly Obama administration jihad against the Fox News_Channel is a revealing window into the soul of empowered liberals. Faced with actual skepticism from FNC amid the Hope-and-Change media lovefest, the reptilian reflex among the president's closest advisers is to demonize the network in an attempt to isolate it among its peers and discredit it as a legitimate news source.

Emboldened administration apparatchiks -- outraged that many of Fox's pundits have yet to experience the Obama tingle up their legs -- now are calling on other news organizations to sever ties with the network.

Senior presidential adviser David Axelrod wants media outlets to declare that Fox is "not a news organization," which would all but require that they disinvite Fox from the White House news pool - the cooperative through which networks share the costs and duties of news coverage. Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel expressed similar sentiments last weekend.

The administration stopped providing guests for "Fox News Sunday" in August, and upped the ante Oct. 11 when Communications Director Anita Dunn lashed out at FNC as "opinion journalism masquerading as news." Dunn's judgment on this and other matters is at least suspect, given that she told an audience of high school students in June that Mao Zedong, the mass-murdering founder of communist China, is one of her "favorite political philosophers." Where, we wonder, are Josef Stalin and Pol Pot on her list?

(And what might Dunn and her fellow Obamaphiles have said two or three years ago had the Bush administration sought to similarly isolate MSNBC because of the nightly rants of venomous uberliberal Keith Olbermann, who seems to have a fetish for impersonating a newsman?)

That said, the administration might want to rethink its attempt to marginalize Fox. Pressing on, the president risks alienating his many media supporters, who, no doubt, understand the precedent set by the Fox fatwa. Their cheerleading for Hope and Change aside, they understand better than most that if one news organization can be isolated and demonized, they're all vulnerable.

All news outlets, Fox, ABC, CBS, NBC and even this newspaper, can never be trusted 100% because they are all trying to sell a product. They all put their own spin on the news. Leave out a comment here or there... tell this stat but not another... whatever it takes to sell the product. Fox just happens to be the only one that doesn't lean to the left.

The reason FOX is so popular is quite obvious NoLeftist, the neocons get sucked in by the vitriolic rhetoric spewed at FOX. They "sensationalize" their stories using the term (shhh just whisper) "conspiracy" as though liberalism itself is some feared evil plot to take over the universe (at least according to Beck), or only provide a snippet of the story in an effort to make "liberals" look bad. I'm not saying most news networks don't have a bias. Its just that most report the good and bad on both sides of the aisle. FOX only reports on the "evil" liberals and offers nothing of factual political reporting. That's why I compared them to The Daily Show and The Cobert Report on Comedy Central. Most everyone knows those programs are pure entertainment, not real news shows. FOX should offer the same disclaimer. Only the most gullible or dense swallow FOX News whole. I'm not saying an ultra liberal viewpoint is any better but this opinion piece is about FOX not Air America. Liberals don't need a program like FOX, we can think for ourselves.

The irony is that if the rest of mainstream media was doing its job (which they'd been at decades before FOX), there'd have been no market for FOX.

Instead, the left-wing mainstream media just continues its slanted agenda-driven reporting and wonders why its ratings and credibility continues to go the way of the dodo.

It only takes a few minutes of Fox every hour or so in the evening to make me feel absolutely sick. The negativity of that so-called "news" outlet is truly damaging to one's health. My biggest complaint with the folks at Fox is that they usually broadcast only part of a story and, then, their method is nearly always slanted. I try to round out my viewing choices by also watching other networks and by spending much of my TV time taking in C-SPAN.

dub190, you still don't get it. This story is about FOX news and the fact their claim of "fair and balanced" news presentation is false. Its obvious even to you that FOX presents biased commentary and tries to pass it off as "news". The author of this featured article wonders if FOX is the enemy. In terms of objective journalistic integrity FOX IS the enemy of those who expect "fair and balanced" news coverage. This story is not about CNN or MSNBC or CNBC or NBC or CBS or ABC or PBS or NPR or The Onion, its about FOX. Your attempt to justify FOX's inability to be truthful in their "news" presentation by saying they are no worse than MSNBC or other news networks is both erroneous and unreasonable (which actually applies to many of your comments).

I am an unapologetic supporter of Fox News. I also enjoy the opinion shows which do tend to lean to the right. Notice the difference, news and opinion shows. The news is actually news, not AP/NYT approved fluff.

For those of you who support the current techno-fascist trend of the government-media complex, remember this: If they ever control your news, food, energy, health care and guns, then they ultimately control you. Right now what is front on the agenda? Controlling what news you hear, the food you eat, the way we power our lives and industry, taking over our health care and imposing "limits" on our constitutional right to keep and bear arms. Anyone see the danger we truly are in here?

How ironic! FOX News today reviles the Austin, TX aerial suicide into federal offices, while the network blindly continues to escalate the anger and elevate the rancor with their own verbal terrorism that breeds such actions by interspersing the news of this tragedy with ads for the Tea Party Express declaring: "“You, the politicians in Washington, have failed We The People with your bailouts, out-of-control deficit spending, government takeovers of sectors of the economy, Cap & Trade, government-run health care, and higher taxes! If you thought we were just going to quietly go away, or that this tea party movement would be just a passing fad, you were mistaken. I used to like Fox but since the 2004 election they have become a clear biased Republican/Conservative outlet. They don't have any true, strong liberals on any show. Where is Stephanie Miller, Randi Rhodes, Thom Hartman, etc...? Alan Colmes, COME ON, he tends to be liberal but apologizes for it.
.
Think of the way they treated John Kerry, actually covering the Swift Boat guys as factual, unbiased researchers. How about the producer getting the crowd going at one of the recent Tea Party rally's, Hannity using incorrect footage to exaggerate the size of the crowd, etc...
.
In addition, think of who they employ: Hannity, Beck, Palin, Rove...Name one Liberal as strong as any of those Conservatives that either has their own show or is a regular. You cannot.
.
There are so many links on youtube that demonstrate everything I have listed. Fox started as fair and balanced (MAYBE) but has become the anti balanced.
.
Seriously, if MSNBC had a slogan like Fair and Balanced it would be correct to rip them for it. They are as left as Fox is right (at least in prime time). If I remember right, GW's administration didn't flock to MSNBC for interviews either.
.
I wouldn't defend fox or MSNBC as "fair and balanced". CNN is the most fair and balanced but it has low enterainment levels and even people claiming to want the news...they are really looking for entertainment. It is unfortunate because their election coverage and State of the Union coverage is outstanding. That said, I find Hannity and Olhbermann much more entertaining and tend to fall for their take of the news instead of actual news coverage.

In high school civics class the instructor played a Hitler speech. Of course afterwards we students loudly questioned why, since we couldn't understand German. Mr. Gallun grinned and asked if the speech made us feel mad? Upset? Were our hearts racing? That's when he pointed out how Hitler used his podium-pounding, sharp tone of voice, and rising volume of his rant to whip the crowd into a frenzy. It was an eye opener for all of us on how easy it was to get manipulated by the self-serving theatrics of a tyrant.

Whenever I have the misfortune to hear Rush Blowhard or the Three Whiners of the Apocalypse on "Fox and Friends," I can't help but be reminded of that ranting speech from high school.

Why would you offer a link to an article “confirming” Fox is fair and balanced then whine when I point out the person making the claim is paid by Fox? The opinion expressed in the original article makes the claim that Obama is wrong to believe Fox is “not a news organization”.
Fox does not even TRY to hide their bias. Hannity and others consistently and purposely use misinformation to discredit Obama and his Administration and Democrats in general. They have every right (freedom of speech) to do that, but then they can’t claim to be a “news organization” or “fair and balanced”. I too believe Obama is justified in his assertion that Fox is NOT a “new organization” and have produced evidence to back it up. Even you dub190, admit Fox is biased.
I know some other networks are biased (either right or left) but they also don’t have direct access to the White House as Fox does (or did).
-
You state the following:
“I have been to and use factcheck. I know it is usually trusworthy. But they still don't list only facts, if they did you'd have EVIDENCE.”
“41 seconds in he says "AMERICA IS NOT A CHRISTIAN NATION" He didn't say JUST! Nice "FACT" you provided on that one! I hope you didn't get that from factcheck.”
-
Yes dub, I did get that from factcheck and yes they do provide facts and EVIDENCE. In fact, here is the link with the facts and evidence you couldn’t seem to find at factcheck.org.
http://www.factcheck.org/askfactcheck/di...
-
“I know AMERICA damn well USED to be a christian nation! Any idiot who knows any little morsel about the beginnings of our country can tell you that."
I agree, any idiot COULD tell me that. You just did but you are still wrong. America IS a Christian nation, as well as Jewish, Muslim, New Age, you name it, we are all free to worship a deity, or not as the case may be. That’s the part the extreme right doesn’t get.
Don’t waste your time justifying Fox’s bias by claiming other networks are biased.
-
“The only people falsifying the news are the lefties.”
You have had many opportunities to logically state your case to prove Fox programming provides a sufficient amount of factual information to be considered a legitimate source for “news”. Instead, all you’ve been able to do is dish out unintelligent, foolish, biased statements (as quoted above) which only proves your intolerance.

I used your link to view the Newsbusters article, dub, and here is the first line of the article, “At Forbes (HT Hot Air Headlines), S. Robert Lichter of George Mason University’s Center for Media and Public Affairs, asks the question, "Fox News: Fair And Balanced?" -- and answers in the affirmative.”
-
Once again dub190, you have failed to do any fact checking on your own. You find an article full of propaganda then use it as factual evidence to support your opinion. Why are you so afraid of the truth? Do you have any idea who S. Robert Lichter is, besides a Professor of Communications at George Mason University? S. Robert Lichter is a PAID CONSULTANT to the Fox News Channel and PRESIDENT of the Center for Media and Public Affairs (CMPA). (Oops, Newsbusters must have left that part out.) So you have a paid consultant for Fox News Channel providing commentary based on a study done by a group in which he serves as president declaring that the organization paying him is fair and balanced. Only a total and complete moron would accept any of the information in the article as truth without digging deeper. Why do you believe a paid consultant is going to present ANY information that would negatively impact the organization that is paying him? NEW FLASH DUB190: An OBJECTIVE news organization concerned with presenting CREDIBLE information would have included that fact in the article! They would want the reader to know that information instead of purposely leaving it out.
Check out this link dub190 for more info on Mr. Lichter then decide for yourself if he more likely to be objective or subjective when it comes to judging bias in news reports on Fox News.

Yes dub, thats WHY IT IS CALLED FACTCHECK!! They verify the accuracy of information presented by media and politicians and either prove the accuracy of the infomation or offer specific evidence to disprove claims.
To answer one of your questions; the facts surrounding the percentage of guns is closer to 34%, not 17%. Both Democrats and Republicans have "fudged" their numbers in an attempt to back up their claims.
How does Obama downplay Christianity? Give me some facts to back up your beliefs.
-
Unlike you dub, factcheck has no reason to put out false information. The do not have a hidden agenda. They do have a well deserved reputation for providing unbiased TRUTHFUL information. Their sole purpose is to serve a resource where individuals can go to obtain accurate and reliable information. Before you go off half-cocked, ranting and raving about something which you know nothing about (like factcheck.org), go check it out for yourself. If you were to actually go to their website you would see where they obtained their information. Do your own search and see what information you get. I provided the information you wanted and you don't even bother to verify it for yourself. If you chose to simply make wild accusations based on your opinion then you are wasting my time. Believing only what you hear on Fox "news" reports is just as foolish as only believing what's reported on CNN or MSNBC. Its your choice dub, stay uninformed or seek a broader range of opinion. Only then will you find the truth, if that's what you want. If you only want to be spoonfed propaganda, keep it on Fox.

The following info was taken from factcheck.org.
--------------
Q: Fox News’ Glenn Beck said that the government will get complete access to your computer and all of your files when you log on to Cars.gov for the Cash for Clunkers program. Is there any truth to this?

A: This claim is false. Beck quoted from a security message on the site for dealers, not the site for the general public.
------------------
Subject: "Counting Mexico’s Guns"
Fox News has put the percentage of guns that have been traced to U.S. sources at only 17 percent, but we (factcheck.org) find that to be based on a mistaken assumption that throws its figure way off.
-------------------
Obama stating that the U.S. is not "just" a Christian nation carries the sense that it is both a Christian nation and more: a nation of Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus and nonbelievers as well. Furthermore, any survey of religious beliefs held by Americans will show that to be a factually correct statement.

This snippet from Obama's two-year-old speech was resurrected June 23 by Fox News, which aired it a number of times. Although the Fox clip retained Obama's awkwardly worded qualification, "at least not just," Fox commentator Sean Hannity said the quote nevertheless showed Obama "seeming to downplay the current role of Christianity in the United States of America." (Hannity also claimed Obama had said the same thing during his 2004 keynote address to the Democratic National Convention, but he was wrong about that. No such words appear there.)
--------------------
Q: Does Obama have an unprecedented number of "czars"?

A: "Czar" is media lingo, not an official title. But our (factcheck.org) research shows that George Bush’s administration had more "czars" than the Obama administration.

"Another thing: Beck counts among his 32 "czars" three who have not been called "czars" by reporters at all, except in stories claiming that the Obama administration has lots of "czars." We’ve compiled a FactCheck.org list that discounts these positions, which seem to be "czars" only in the context of media czar-hysteria. (Our list also adds three czars Beck’s research didn’t find – a "diversity czar," a "manufacturing czar" and an "Iran czar.")"
-----------------
You can find much more on factcheck.org dub. Actually, Fox isn't the only one speading propaganda, they just happen to be one of the few who package and sell it as "news".

What makes Fox News Channel a "news outlet", soxfan33? Because they have men and women dressed like news anchors? Because they use charts and graphs as a means to prove their point? Because they sit at a desk and discuss "news" events? Saturday Night Live does the same thing. Does that make them a "news outlet"?
Check out the link brewcrew420 provided. You write that, "The goverments (sic) position is, agree with us or we'll shut you down." which is far from the truth. They simply want Fox to act like a "news outlet" and report actual "news" events if Fox wants to maintain access to the White House. No other "opinion" based outlet has direct access to the White House so why should Fox "News". Fox has every right to disagree with the President, they just can't be considered a "new outlet" if they would prefer to offer up opinions instead of simply reporting the news. You do see the difference don't you soxfan33?

-

Your point, dub190, is that Fox is a legitimate news source because they have high ratings. Then, of ALL the events which have transpired in the past 10 months that have the potential to significantly impact our lives you bring up the "birthers"?

My point is, you can not seem to differentiate between listening to a fact based news report to form an opinion, and listening to an opinion thinking you are listening to a fact based news report. Thats the difference between the McLehrer News Hour on PBS and Fox News.

The "losers" are those who believe they are actually hearing news when listening to a majority of the Fox News programing. O'Reilly, Hannity and Beck (among others on Fox) could just as well have their shows on Comedy Central following The Daily Show and Colbert Report, except most of the time they aren't nearly as funny. If Fox has the credentials to be part of the White House press pool, so should the National Enquirer. Daily reports of "new evidence" questioning our Presidents citizenship fit right in with the latest alien abduction stories! Instead of "Fair and Balanced", Fox's tagline should read "Skewed and Misleading". Fox is a joke, but some just don't get it.
