Janesville's Jacobson joins Junior A squad
David Jacobson is a Villanova Knight.
The 2009 Janesville Parker High School graduate signed last Friday with Ontario’s Junior A hockey team and will report to training camp on Aug. 15.
As a three-year starter in goal for the Janesville Bluebirds, Jacobson finished his career as the program’s all-time leader in wins, saves and shutouts. He helped lead Janesville’s high school co-op team to back-to-back Big Eight Conference titles in 2007 and 2008.
Villanova’s assistant coach Mark Edwards said Jacobson’s play at the Prospect’s Tournament in Toronto in May made the choice to sign him an easy one.
“We had some great goalies in camp, but when we saw Jacobson, we knew we had to explore the option of adding him,” Edwards said. “I made a call to a goalie scout I use in the U.S, and as fate would have it, he knew David very well and gave us a glowing scouting report on his ability.”
The Knights play in a league similar to the Janesville Jets, and the league serves as a collegiate pipeline for many of the players.
“David’s getting a chance to get his foot in the door, and that’s the most important thing,” said Bluebirds coach John Mauermann.
“He wanted to go somewhere that guaranteed him a chance to play, and it sounds like he’s going to get that opportunity with Villanova. And he has the talent to play at that level.”
Jacobson is the second member of the 2008-09 Bluebird team to sign with a Junior League team. Parker High graduate Ross Mauermann is on the Janesville Jets roster as a forward/center.
