A resident on Ridge Road called the Walworth County Sheriff's office about 8:30 a.m. Thursday to report a deer on the ice.

When deputies arrived, they found the animal about 500 feet off E. Lake Shore Drive.

"The deer was severely wounded, and there was a fairly large amount of blood on the ice," said Sgt. Timothy Otterbacher. "We called a SWAT team sniper to dispatch the deer humanely."

Otterbacher then put on a cold-water rescue suit and secured with a rope inched out onto the ice.

He retrieved the deer so someone could use it, Otterbacher said.
