JANESVILLE — With the first big winter storm predicted to hit this week, traffic accidents and highway delays are sure to follow.

To help manage traffic in poor weather conditions, state and county officials pay closer attention to cameras put in place a year ago along Interstate 39/90 in Rock County.

“I watch them more in the winter than I do any other time,” said Rock County Emergency Planning Coordinator Shirley Connors. “Once the snow starts flying, I’ll be watching them more.”

After an early February 2008 snowstorm left about 2,000 motorists stranded for hours along Interstate 39/90 in Dane and Rock counties, installation of the cameras became a higher priority.

“Unfortunately, it took the situation in February 2008 to push it ahead,” Connors said.

The state Department of Transportation purchased the video cameras and installed 45-foot-tall poles on overpasses in 2004, but a lack of funds for upkeep and installation kept the cameras in storage.
