Janesville Craig’s freshman pitchers got the job done on the mound Monday night.

Nick Cramer and Evan Spry combined on a six-hitter, and the Cougars got a big night from junior Kevin Brandt as they beat Stoughton 13-3 in a six-inning nonconference game.

“We had the two freshman pitchers again tonight, and they kept us in the game,” Craig coach Vic Herbst said. “Stoughton has put up a lot of runs in the Badger South, so holding them to three runs on six hits was big.

“Spry only faced 11 hitters in the three innings he worked in relief, and he didn’t give up any hits.”

Craig led 5-3 heading to the bottom of the fifth inning. There, Brandt cleared the bases with a three-run double.

“That really put the nail in the coffin,” Herbst said. “He had his best night of the year. He was really squaring on the ball.”

Brandt finished 3-for-3 and drove in five runs.

Craig improved to 8-3 overall. The Cougars are scheduled to play every day this week except Wednesday, and they host Madison East in Big Eight action at 5 p.m. tonight in Riverside Park.
