Your Views: Drivers, motorcyclists both play roles in biker safety

Spring has finally arrived. It is a great time to get outside and enjoy all the things we love to do. It is also the time of the year that all of us need to be aware that motorcycles will once again be on the road.

Last year in Wisconsin, we saw a 30 percent decrease in motorcycle fatalities. Let's help keep that number down. Awareness and education play large roles in this. ABATE of Wisconsin teaches a Share the Road program to new drivers. Take the time to talk to the young drivers in your house about the need to share the road with motorcycles. It is also a good time to remind yourself to take extra caution.

As the Gazette reported, in Our Views on Jan. 30, crashes at intersections with the most wrecks typically are caused by driver error.

May is Motorcycle Awareness Month in Wisconsin. Let's all do our part to drive down the fatality rate again in 2014. The people on motorcycles are wives, husbands, mothers, fathers, grandfathers/mothers, sons and daughters. Be aware out on the roadways. Don't text and drive; it can wait.

Look twice; save a life.
