Your Views: Don't misunderstand beliefs of Paul Ryan, GOP
Larry Oppelt's recent letter showed his lack of understanding of the Republican Party and Rep. Paul Ryan. Blanket statements about Republicans supporting pre-emptive wars and the United Nations are preposterous. The principles of small government and a strong constitution are paramount in the Republican platform.
Republicans only have the majority in the House. They have passed dozens of bills that sit in the Senate, never to be discussed or voted on. Republicans are being stymied from many of their goals by the Democratic Senate and Barack Obama's veto threats. Democrats are obstructing Republicans at every turn. Elections have consequences, and our country continues to pay dearly for recent election results.
Congressman Ryan believes four principles should guide our efforts regarding immigration.
First, we need to secure the border. We can't have a secure country without a secure border.
Second, we need to enforce our laws, to avoid repeating the mistakes of the past.
Third, we need to encourage legal immigration. We need a guest-worker program that meets the needs of our economy and attracts the best and brightest to our shores.
Fourth, we need to give people a chance to get right with the law. We should welcome anyone who is committed to America. But we should always uphold the rule of law and be fair to those who followed it. Ryan believes no amnesty should be provided.
I hope Republicans can take control of the Senate in November and get our country back on track.
