JANESVILLE--The city of Janesville has declared a snow emergency beginning at 4 p.m. today, and several school districts have announced they are closing early.

Among those announcing closings on Monday were the school districts of Beloit, Beloit Turner, Clinton, Milton and Orfordville Parkview. Click here for a complete list of closings.

The town of Beloit also declared a snow emergency from 10 a.m. Monday until midnight.

The Janesville snow emergency means all parked vehicles must be removed from city streets and public parking lots until snow plowing operations are complete. Residents should keep their vehicles off the streets until they have been plowed.

Residents who do not have garages or driveways can park in designated snow emergency parking stalls in seven city downtown parking lots.

Those lots are:

--East Wall Street at East Wall Street and North Parker Drive

--Municipal Building lot at West Wall Street and North Jackson Street

--South High Street at West Court Street and South High Street

--Senior center Lot at St. Lawrence Avenue and Water Street

--Hedberg Public Library lot on Water Street

--River/Union Street lot at South River Street and Union Street

--North Parker Drive Parking Ramp at North Parker Drive and East Wall Street

 Signs designate snow emergency stalls.

The fine for parking on the street is $50. Police may begin issuing tickets before plowing begins.

For more information, go to the city's website or call 608-755-SNOW.

The closures follow weather advisories and forecasts that call for a winter storm to drop 4 to 7 inches of snow locally Monday, creating driving hazards for afternoon commuters, forecasters say.

Milton Superintendent Tim Schigur has announced the following afternoon closures and release times Monday:

- Milton Middle School: closed with students being released at 1 p.m.

- Milton High School: closed with students being released at 1:10 p.m.

- Milton Elementary Schools: closed with students being released at 2:15 p.m.

The early releases Monday come on a scheduled late-start day development. The closure will not prompt an extra make-up day for Milton, Schigur wrote in a Twitter posting Monday morning.

All Janesville School District after school activities have been cancelled according to Public Information Specialist Kevin Leavy.
