Telemarketing tops consumer complaint list
MADISON — Telemarketing once again tops the list of consumer complaints in Wisconsin.
Consumer protection officials say it's the eleventh year in a row that telemarketing complaints have been at the top of the list. Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection division chief Sandy Chalmers says seniors face a number of phone-based scams in 2013. Telemarketers pitched phony medical alert devices and "assistance" programs for the elderly.
The State Journal reports telemarketing generated nearly twice as many complaints as landlord/tenant issues, which is second on the list. Telecommunications is third, with many complaints about billing, channel availability and contract issues.
Identity theft is fourth on the consumer complaint list.
