JANESVILLE—Police who responded to a Janesville home Wednesday afternoon found a 13-year-old girl with a gunshot wound. Only the girl and her 20-year-old brother were in the home, according to a Janesville police news release.

Officers were dispatched at 1:05 p.m. to 3381 Spaulding Ave. for a report of a juvenile female who had suffered a gunshot wound.

The girl called police and handed the phone to her brother, who also spoke to the dispatcher, Deputy Chief Dan Davis said.

When officers arrived, the only people in the home were the teen and her brother. The circumstances surrounding how the shooting occurred remain under investigation, Davis said.

The girl’s injuries do not appear to be life threatening, and she was taken to Mercy Hospital and Trauma Center, he said. The girl was shot in the upper body, but Davis could not say how many times.

A handgun was recovered, he said.

No arrests have been made, and Davis said he doesn’t know if an arrest will be made.

“The Janesville Police Department is confident that no further threat is posed to the immediate neighborhood or the community in general,” the release reads.
