Craig surges late to beat Sun Prairie
The Janesville Craig boys basketball team took over down the stretch of a Big Eight Conference game Saturday night.
The Cougars outscored Sun Prairie 12-2 in the final four minutes to win 64-60 at home.
Craig improved to 5-2 overall and 3-2 in the Big Eight. Sun Prairie is 2-4 and 2-3.
“It was just a great team effort from top to bottom,” Craig assistant Bob Richards said. “Nick Noskowiak is a pretty good player, and he got 25 points, but we made him work for it.”
The Cardinals and Cougars were tied, 44-44 after three quarters, and Craig trailed by four midway through the fourth.
But senior guard Jerry Ngobi had eight of his 14 points down the stretch, and junior forward Ross Smith had six of his eight in the fourth quarter to lead the Cougars back.
They were up two points when they forced a driving miss with four seconds left.
Senior forward Mike Murphy—who led the Cougars with 21 points—found freshman SanTrell Payton with a full-court pass and layup to put the game on ice.
The Cougars, just one game out of first place in conference, play at Mount Horeb in a nonconference game on Tuesday.
