Parker boys upset Middleton
J.J. Scott came up big when the Janesville Parker boys basketball team needed him.
The 6-foot-2 senior scored a career-high 29 points, including 12 in overtime, to lead the Vikings past visiting Middleton, 79-70, in overtime in Big Eight Conference boys basketball Thursday night.
The Vikings, who lost in the final seconds to Madison La Follette last week, appeared to be in control in this one.
The Vikings led by 13 at halftime and by 11 going into the fourth quarter, before the Cardinals rallied.
Middleton tied it with eight seconds left in regulation, and Parker's open look at the buzzer missed.
“I think we just weren't as aggressive as we had been,” Parker coach Ryan Masterson said of the fourth quarter. “We quit going to the basket and they hit some big shots.”
Thoughts of that La Follette loss might have came up, but Scott quickly erased them.
Scott hit eight of 10 free throws in overtime as the Vikings rolled up 18 points in the five-minute period.
“I think the kids got over the hump tonight,” Masterson said. “You know, they built a lead, lost it and then came back and won in overtime. I couldn't be prouder of the kids.”
Besides Scott's 29 points, senior guard Adam Thompson contributed 19 points and ran the Viking offense.
“They pressed us all night, and Adam got through it,” Masterson said.
Cullen Osmond added 11 points for the Vikings.
Parker, now 1-3 in the Big Eight and 2-3 overall, plays at Beloit Memorial at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
