Your Views: Move away from God is destroying country
Our search for and our reliance on divine direction and blessings for this country have been sorely and tragically neglected, even dismissed in recent years. Our loss of morals, emotional control and unity of purpose is matched by our personal and interpersonal conflicts and violence. Our families, the foundation of civilization, and moral code are disintegrating, debilitating and proving to be disastrous to America. Conflicts in our political and social fabric cry out in the headlines, and our civility and manners are in tatters.
On Nov. 26, 1789, at the request of the U.S. Congress, George Washington ordered an observance of that “day of public thanksgiving.” Abraham Lincoln in 1863 also issued an executive order in response to the U.S. Congress’ resolution setting aside “a day of Thanksgiving” for the country. Our Founding Fathers’ private and public writings and words are replete with their commitment to divine guidance, providence and blessings, and specifically Jesus Christ. The DVD by David Barton, “The Spiritual Heritage of the U.S. Capitol” tells a beautiful, factual story. In God We Trust has been our national motto since the Civil War.
This Thanksgiving, the Nov. 28, I would strongly recommend we turn our hearts and minds toward God, the almighty, and truly give thanks for our personal and family blessings and those innumerable blessings this country has received. After that, go to your place of worship and place yourself in the hands of God.
