TRICK-or-TREAT for UNICEF! Next Thursday is HALLOWEEN. Through the years I have encouraged persons and groups to use HALLOWEEN to get contributions for UNICEF through the program sponsored by the United States fund for UNICEF. You will be able to get information and materials at TRICK-or-TREAT for UNICEF.

I hope you will check it out. We know that our children and youth do NOT need any more candy in context with the OBESITY EPIDEMIC in America! If you need more information, check out the Endoctrine Society's website. STOP the candy epidemic and invest in the well-being of children throughout the world. Why NOT?

I consider UNICEF as one of the MOST SIGNIFICANT & VALUABLE missions of the UN.

The history of UNICEF is reported by Wikipedia, “The United Nations Children's Fund is a United Nations Programme headquartered in New York City, that provides long-term humanitarian and developmental assistance to children and mothers in developing countries. It is one of the members of the United Nations Development Group and its Executive Committee.”

I think the history of UNICEF is very important, “UNICEF was created by the United Nations General Assembly on December 11, 1946, to provide emergency food and healthcare to children in countries that had been devastated by World War II. In 1953, UNICEF became a permanent part of the United Nations System and its name was shortened from the original United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund but it has continued to be known by the popular acronym based on this previous title.”

There is much more information in Wikipedia's article, “UNICEF.”

For all of the naysayers, I suggest YOU review Foreign Affairs (published by the Council on Foreign Relations) by Shashi Tharoor, “Why America Still Needs the United Nations.”

I urge readers to consider the poignant statement by Tharoor, “The United Nations is the preeminent institution of multilateralism. It provides a forum where sovereign states can come together to share burdens, address common problems, and seize common opportunities. The UN helps establish the norms that many countries -- including the United States -- would like everyone to live by. Throughout its history, the United States has seen the advantages of living in a world organized according to laws, values, and principles; in fact, the republic was not yet 30 years old when it first went to war in defense of international law (attacking the Barbary pirates in 1804), and it has done so multiple times since, including in the first Gulf War. The UN, for all its imperfections -- real and perceived -- reflects this American preference for an ordered world.”

I readily agree that there are many weaknesses and challenges in the United Nations. I advocate reform and empowerment for the sake of the whole wide world for ALL HUMANKIND. What do YOU advocate?

I continue to assert: The UN has been productive for humankind throughout the world. The world is better for this that the UN, scorned and covered with scars, Still strives with its limited resources and continuing courage, to reach the unreachable stars! (I love the musical, “Man of LaMancha” – I have reworded Joe Darion's “The Impossible Dream.”)

I do dream the IMPOSSIBLE DREAM for humankind, the whole wide world and the United Nations! Do YOU?
