EDGERTON—Speed kills, even on a volleyball court.

After they each went unbeaten through their Rock Valley Conference divisional schedules, East Troy and Big Foot met in the title match of the league tournament on Saturday afternoon.

The Trojans, ranked No. 1 in the state in Division 2, came out firing on all cylinders and improved their record to 38-0 with a 25-7, 25-16 sweep at Edgerton High School.

“What it really comes down to for us is I think we’re a pretty fast team, so that’s what we’ve stressed all year long,” East Troy coach Jeremy Weis said. “If we do that, it puts a lot of pressure on other teams that haven’t faced that.”

East Troy never gave up more than 12 points in its route to the title game, sweeping Orfordville Parkview and Brodhead.

Big Foot took down Madison Edgewood and McFarland, but appeared stunned in the first game against the Trojans and never fully recovered.

“We just haven’t played anyone that fast,” Big Foot coach Jen Koplitz said. “Once we caught up to the speed, (we were better). But our block was just not consistent, and you can’t do that against a team like that.

“The good news is they’re the best team in the state and the next time we’d have to see them is the state finals.”

East Troy looked very much like a team poised to make a run to that point.

Sophomore M.E. Dodge led the Trojans with 19 kills in three matches, while senior Brittney Jakscht dished out 63 assists and Mykie Olsen came up with 20 digs.

“Ultimately, all season long, it’s been about the WIAA tournament, and that’s a gold ball we want to get,” Weis said. “We’ve been starting to talk to them about being mentally and physically preparing themselves for the three-week tournament run.

“This group has stayed focused the whole year so far.”

Focused. And fast.
