Milton High did enough to earn itself a spot in the WIAA football playoffs Friday night.

The Red Hawks used a 10-yard touchdown run by Taylor Snell and a standout defense to defeat visiting Stoughton, 6-3, in a key Badger South Conference game involving playoff possibilities.

Both Milton and Stoughton needed to win the conference finale to qualify for the playoffs. Teams that have .500 or better records in conference play will qualify for the playoffs.

The victory puts the Red Hawks at 3-3 in the Badger South and 3-6 overall. Stoughton finishes 2-4 in the Badger South and 4-5 overall.

“This was a tremendous defensive struggle,” Milton coach Bill O’Leary said.

Stoughton kicked a 43-yard field goal on the final play of the first half.

“We had three kids run right past it,” O’Leary said. “If we block that, we go up 6-0 and then it’s ‘Katy, bar the door.’”

Instead, the Red Hawks trailed at halftime.

An interception by Brandon Calbert set up the Red Hawks’ only score. Taylor Snell ran it in from 10 yards out with 9:16 left in the third quarter to give Milton the lead.

After that, the Milton defense took over.

“We played dynamically on defense,” O’Leary said.

Avery Ousterhout led the defense with seven tackles, a sack and a tackle for a loss. Fellow junior Hunter Nelson had 5˝ tackles and one assist.

Snell finished with 99 yards on 19 carries, while Zachary Hoard had 60 yards on 16.
