Shearing, farm tour part of Fiber Fest
Sheep and goat shearing, a farm tour, demonstrations on creating fibers and using them to make items ranging from clothing to artwork, and a selection of fibers to purchase, were all part of Fiber Festival at the Tall Grass Farm in Delavan October 5.
Visitors got to watch master shearer David Kier demonstrate techniques that are centuries old and used around the world as he sheared alpaca goats, a procedure that does not harm the animals but provides the raw wool fibers that make up mohair yarn.
Some visitors, like Gwen Maitzen of Oregon, were well-acquainted with Tall Grass Farm and its owner, Susan Miller. The Maitzen family has 17 angora goats, most of the genetic line which comes from Miller's farm. Maitzen, calss Miller the "goatie guru goddess" for all the assitance and knowledge Miller has supplied the family with over the years.
