MADISON—The unemployment rate in the Janesville metro area decreased in August, as it did in all 11 other metro areas in the state, the Department of Workforce Development reported Wednesday.

The department said the August rate for Rock County—also known as the Janesville Metropolitan Statistical Area—was 7.4 percent, down from the 7.9 percent reported in July and below the 8.2 percent tallied in August 2012.

Overall, the state unemployment rate in August was 6.2 percent, an decrease from the 6.8 percent rate posted in July and down from the 6.8 percent posted in August 2012, the department reported.

July-to-August rates decreased in all 12 major metro areas in the state.

Of the 32 Wisconsin cities with at least 25,000 people, unemployment rates dropped in all of them.

Among counties, Rock County had the 14th highest rate, while St. Croix County had the lowest at 4 percent.

Walworth County had an August unemployment rate of 6.3 percent, while Green and Jefferson counties had rates of 5.2 percent and 6.3 percent, respectively. All three rates were lower than the previous month, the department reported, and rates declined in 69 of the state's 72 counties.

Among individual cities, Janesville's rate of 7.8 percent in August was the seventh highest in the state.

With an August unemployment rate of 10.9 percent, Beloit had the second-highest rate among Wisconsin cities. It trailed only Racine and its August unemployment rate of 11.2 percent.

Local unemployment rates are not seasonally adjusted.
