BUFFALO, N.Y.—UW-Whitewater’s football had to endure an 11-hour bus ride to Buffalo, New York to play a nonconference game Saturday.

The Warhawks made the trip worthwhile.

Matt Behrendt threw for 187 yards and four touchdowns to lead Whitewater to a 55-14 win over Buffalo State. The Warhawks, who lost to the Bengals a year ago, jumped out to a 45-7 halftime lead and continued to pour it on in the second half.

“I was really pleased with the way our guys went about their business,” Whitewater coach Lance Leipold said. “After playing a game and then having a week off, I wasn’t sure how they’d respond, especially with the long bus ride.

“We got off to a great start and played with a lot of confidence on both sides of the ball. It was important to prove that we had the ability to create some big plays, and we did that.”

Whitewater (2-0) jumped out to a 24-0 lead in the opening quarter. Behrendt had two touchdown passes, and Steve Morris—in his only pass attempt of the game—connected with Jake Kumerow on a 36-yard scoring strike to make it 24-0 with 2:28 left in the first.

Andrew Keister, an Evansville High graduate, capped off a productive first half for the Warhawks with a 30-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown to make it 45-7 with 6:08 left in the second quarter.

Preseason all-america placekicker Eric Kindler made two field goals for Whitewater and finished with 13 points.

“All but two of the 60 players we brought along played today, and the two that didn’t were sitting out with injuries,” Leipold said. “That’s going to make the long bus ride home a little easier.”

Whitewater hosts Waldorf College next Saturday at 1 p.m. in its final nonconference game.
