HARTFORD--The Milton Raptors' second straight trip to the Rock River League Grand Championship series ended the same way its first trip did: with disappointment.

Milton traveled to Hartford for Game 2 of the series--having lost the first on Aug. 31--and fell 4-3.

The Raptors grabbed an early two-run lead in the first inning off a pitcher who threw nine shutout innings against them in Game 1’s extra-inning loss. Milton’s first two batters walked, and Josh Shere doubled them in. Shere was stranded at third base to end the threat.

After that, Hartford went to work, chipping away at the lead with single runs in the first and fourth innings.

“They bunted guys over and scrapped for runs,” Raptors coach Doug Welch said.

In the bottom of the sixth, Sean McCann, who Welch said pitched well enough to win the game, walked leadoff hitter Tom Kluck. His brother, Jim, sacrificed him to second base before Tyler Kladerud’s opposite-field double brought him in to score. Kladerud came in on a base hit by Derek Hall to give Hartford a 4-2 lead.

Dave Sagitis scored Milton’s third run on a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning.

Welch said making two straight trips to the championship series was nice, but he and his players obviously want to win it.

“You never feel good unless you win the last game of the season,” he said. His team finished 18-5 in the Rock River League and has compiled a 35-11 mark over the last two seasons.
