Fair's attendance fair: Numbers in from the Walworth County Fair
ELKHORN--A heat wave followed by a storm put a slight dent into attendance numbers at the Walworth County Fair, organizers said Monday.
“It's going fine, but attendance will be down for us,” said Susan Pruessing, manager of marketing for the fair.
Wednesday through Sunday, attendance was 103,475. Monday's turnout of 27,210 put the total for the fair at 130,685.
Last year 134,409 people attended the fair. Attendance was 140,677 in 2011.
The fair has been keeping attendance records since 1971. Record recorded attendance was in 1999, when 194,057 people came through the gates.
On Thursday and Friday, temperatures were in the mid 90s, and attendance on both days was a little more than 15,000. Friday's muggy and hot weather brewed a severe storm with high winds and rain, Pruessing said.
“Some of the vendor tents in the market area were blown down,” Pruessing said. “The good thing was that the storm didn't last very long.”
The Oak Ridge Boys were scheduled to perform that evening, and after a quick clean up in the grandstand area, they were able to take the stage, she said.
On Sunday, another late afternoon storm threatened the Beach Boys concert, but organizers were able to get everything back on track, Pruessing said.
